Natural plant fibers offer unique features and make excellent floor coverings.

At Natürlich we carry a full range of natural plant fiber floor coverings. We have samples of sisal, seagrass, abaca, mountain grass, coir, and hand-spun jute in our showroom. They each have their own particular appeal and unique benefits and can be used for both residential and commercial purposes. Natural plant fibers are produced without harmful chemicals and are easy to care for, so they are a great choice for those with chemical sensitivities, allergies, or asthma.

The manufacturing process for plant fiber floor coverings has much less impact on the environment than synthetic materials. Plus, natural plant fibers are biodegradable so they aren’t as problematic in landfills as synthetic carpets when they are removed.

Sisal

Sisal

Sisal is the most popular plant fiber used for floor covering. Sisal is obtained from the agave plant and is extremely durable, rugged, and a very versatile material. Sisal can be used to make carpets in a variety of textures, patterns, colors, and weaves. Sisal is often used in a natural color and also comes in a broad range of dyed colors. The agave plant is grown without the use of herbicides and pesticides. The natural look of sisal is perfect for both area rugs and wall-to-wall uses. Sisal’s inherent beauty compliments most any design theme.

Sisal carpets are also naturally sound-absorbing, anti-static, and won’t trap dust. Sisal can even be installed as a wall covering treatment! Sisal is easy to maintain with just vacuuming, and will add a beautiful texture–unmatched by synthetic fibers.

Sisal Stair Runners

Sisal Stair Runners

Sisal is great for stair runners. The durability and slip resistance this fiber naturally provides, makes Sisal an excellent candidate to be installed on stairs. Sisal can also be used to replace existing carpet. In addition, edge treatments can vary, and matching area rugs can be fabricated to correspond with the stairs.

Seagrass

Seagrass

There are a number of different plants grown in the wet and coastal areas of South Asia which provide the fibers that are woven into what is known as seagrass. The fiber is never dyed so seagrass starts out a lovely greenish tone and gradually turns more golden with time. Seagrass is durable, resilient, and resistant to spills and soiling. It brings the look and feel of nature into your home or work space.

Jute Rugs

Jute Rugs

While commonly used as a biodegradable backing for other sustainable flooring, such as natural linoleum and wool carpet, jute can be made into a unique floor covering as well. Jute fibers are harvested from the jute plant, which can grow to between six to ten feet tall in areas of India and Bangladesh. The fibers are hand spun into a soft, almost fluffy, floor covering that comes in an array of incredible colors.
